Monitoring Tools for Small & Medium Business
Network monitoring also referred to as fault-management, alarm management or
alerting is the process of scrutinizing computer networks to report on the overall
health of the network.  The network monitor accomplishes this task by reporting on
link failures, node failures, system outages and various errors. Example of errors
includes but not limited to errors caused by over utilizations such as packet drops
and timeouts; errors caused by NIC or port miss configurations such as duplex
mismatch, Port or VLAN mismatch.
Alerting or notifying is another function of the monitoring tool.  Some monitoring
tools are capable of categorizing detected problem using various priorities such as
informational, warning, error, major, critical, etc.  The network administrator may
program the monitoring tool to take appropriate alerting action based on the priority
of the problem detected, for instance: page network administrator for critical
problems, log warnings, email major problems, etc.

mapping as well as application monitoring capabilities.   Another useful feature of
this application is the ability to monitor web page load time.  To download a trial
copy of  Axence NetVision click download or click the windows shown below
  • SNMPc from Castle Rock is an easy to install and configure distributed network
management tool capable of real-time monitoring of network devices.  Even
though SNMPc is a simple tool, it is an effective tool for monitoring, reporting,
notifying and mapping of network nodes.  The SNMPc Network Manager,
introduced in 1989, was the first available SNMP manager for Windows.
SNMPc is offered in two flavors: Workgroup edition and Enterprise edition.  To

  • EM7 from sciencelogic is a hardware based network management tool capable of
device monitoring, application monitoring, performance monitoring, service level
monitoring and reporting.  It provides reporting on device availability, response
time, interface errors, packet discards, TCP port availability, services, CPU and
processor usage, web content verification as well as transmission speed. A
unique feature of EM7 is the integration of ticketing application with other EM7
applications such as event management that allows the administrator to simply
generate a ticket by clicking on the event. To sign up for a live demo click the
